A Glance at Tropical infections: Tropical diseases are infectious diseases that are prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries with large fluctuations in climate. These are mainly vector-borne diseases caused by the infection of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Common tropical diseases are Malaria, Dengue, Tuberculosis, West Nile virus, Zika virus, Chikungunya, etc. The magnitude of tropical infections is higher in countries with greater populations, lack of sufficient resources, sanitation facilities and medical care, etc. Therefore, tropical diseases are also known as "diseases of poverty". However, disease incidence can be reduced through increased awareness, advanced treatment options, and strict prevention and control measures as public health initiatives.   Why is Tropical Diseases Research Essential? Innovative research is the cornerstone of any disease control measures. Since tropical diseases include a multitude of diseases affecting people in di...

What to know about diagnosis and handling of West Nile virus samples?

Image
West Nile virus disease is a zoonotic infection majorly seen in the continental United States and parts of Europe. It is caused by the West Nile Virus (WNV), transmitted from person to person by the bile of an infected Culex mosquito. Diagnostic tests for West Nile fever: Serological testing and Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis are the mainstays in diagnosing West Nile virus infection. IgM antibodies specific to WNV are typically found in serum and CSF identified through immunoassays like ELISA and RT-PCR. WNV-specific IgM antibodies can usually be found 3 to 8 days after the onset of illness and typically last for 30 to 90 days; however, persistent infections with extended durability have been observed. Therefore, IgM antibody positivity can also occur due to a previous infection. At the same time, the absence of WNV-specific IgM in the serum samples or CSF samples collected during the initial eight days of symptoms doesn't necessarily prove no infection. A subsequent sam...

Zika Virus- causes, symptoms and prevention

Image
What Exactly is Zika? Zika virus disease is a mosquito-borne infectious disease highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries. It transmits through the bite of Aedes mosquitos (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). It can also transmit through the exchange of body fluids during sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, organ transplant and from the infected mother to the newborn. Usually, Zika virus infection is mild and self-limiting. However, in serious cases, it can lead to neurological disorders, congenital defects and Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). What are the symptoms of Zika? In general, the signs and symptoms of a Zika virus infection are mild and self-limiting. Although most patients remain asymptomatic throughout the early disease phase, usually, the patient develops a high-grade fever, fatigue, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, muscle pain, conjunctivitis, and maculopapular rashes in the later stages. Pregnant women experience severe negative effects due to the terato...

What is Dengue fever and its causes and symptoms?

Image
Dengue fever is an infectious disease that spreads from one person to another by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus). Hence it is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a single positive-stranded RNA virus called Dengue virus (DENV). It exists in four serotypes, namely, DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. Every year millions of people, regardless of age and gender, are affected with Dengue fever, typically in tropical and subtropical countries like Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. At the same time, increased climatic changes and global warming resulted in reports of Dengue fever in Europe and the United States. Dengue Fever Symptoms Often the patients remain asymptomatic in the early course of the illness. In later stages, the patients usually develop flu-like symptoms with high-grade fever. They also develop headaches, muscle pain, joint pain, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, hemorrhagic manifestations, swollen glands...

Chagas- A neglected tropical disease

Image
Understand more of the Chagas disease Chagas disease, commonly known as American trypanosomiasis, is a chronic infection brought on by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. It spreads through the bite of a blood-sucking insect called a triatomine bug or kissing bug. Despite being identified 100 years ago, the a is still a significant social and public health concern in Latin America, Mexico, Central America, and tropical countries. Moreover, it is classified as a neglected tropical disease by the world health organization. Risk of Chagas disease: People living in rural regions are most at risk of contracting the triatomine bug since it thrives in poor housing conditions (such as mud walls and thatched roofs). This bug is widespread in many rural parts of the country. Congenital transmission, blood transfusion, organ transplantation, exposure to contaminated blood, and other methods are also used to spread the disease. Due to the chronic infection, it may be fatal if u...
